Cheap Mexican auto insurance for rental cars

Once upon a time, driving into Mexico was just that, wave at the border guards and drive on in. Now it takes more planning and more paperwork and some extra cash to legally drive in Mexico and it gets even trickier for rental cars. You need to know the rules and some of the ways to get cheap Mexican insurance to cover your rental vehicle across the border. You need to arrange for Mexican insurance when renting the vehicle since you must have the permission of an owner or lien holder to import a vehicle registered in a foreign country across the border. (If you take your own car and are still making payments, you need to get a document from your lender giving this permission as well.)

You can do a web search and find many possibilities using “insurance”, “Mexican” and “cheap” or “discount “ to locate carriers to compare prices and benefits. Always get a quote from your own US auto insurance provider. They may have a good deal for their own members, and you have the convenience and security of dealing with a familiar company.

It may be cheapest and easiest to rent the car inside Mexico. Your credit card will then provide basic coverage but you probably should buy a supplemental policy anyway. The paper work is easier this way, but be sure to read and understand the rental agreement very carefully. You also need to note even the most minor scratches; dings and other little problems or you will be charged for them when you return the car to the rental agency.

You need proof of registration and ownership, and proof of your citizenship. Display this on your dashboard. You will need to show proof of Mexican coverage when you enter Mexico with your rental, as well as the consent papers from the car rental company. You will also need a valid driver’s license and a valid credit card to pay the temporary vehicle rental fee which is currently $15 USD. If you don’t have a credit card you will have to pay a bond and if you do have an accident, may be held in Mexico until all damages are paid. You will still need to pay the $15 processing fee as well.

You must also purchase a Mexican tourist card which is also $15 USD. It is good for 180 days, so keep it if you plan to return within that time to save paying repeated fees. If you plan to make several trips, look in to buying a six month Mexican insurance policy which is as low as $150 USD and is a great savings over daily rates.
